Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Elections – #KnowYourGovernment

Overview

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) is responsible for protecting the quality of the water supply in Cook County by overseeing wastewater treatment, as well as managing water levels in order to minimize storm and flood damage.

On November 8th, voters can choose 3 of the 6 MWRD Commissioner candidates running for 6-year terms, and 1 of 3 running for 2-year terms.

Why is it important?

Environmental issues to consider include improving treatment processes to reduce water contaminants, making infrastructure and treatment processes more sustainable, and improving infrastructure for handling flooding due to climate change-driven “extreme rains.”
