Drinks & Discourse: No Human Being is Illegal
August 16 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Join us this month for a panel discussion on Immigration in Chicago. The discussion is meant to move the conversation past the terrifying and reactionary news cycle and into real people’s experiences with immigration and real vision for what a just world could be.
About the Panelists:
Andre Vasquez is a community organizer, Chair of Reclaim Chicago North Chapter and Executive Director of Chicago Progress. He is the son of Guatemalan immigrants and a resident of the 40th ward.
Marta Popadiak is the Field Director of Reclaim Chicago, Director of United Neighbors of the 35th Ward. She is the daughter or Polish immigrants and resides in Avondale.
David Martinez arrived to Los Angeles from then war torn El Salvador as an undocumented immigrant in the late 1980s. He has since overcome the cultural, language, financial, and other typical struggles most immigrants are faced with and after receiving his bachelors in Mathematics he now works as a software developer in Chicago.
Eglė Malinauskaitė is an undocumented genderqueer (we, us, our(s)) Lithuanian immigrant, a student studying biomedical engineering at Illinois Tech, and community organizer. We want a borderless world in the context of economic, racial, gender, sexuality and disability justice.
Gabe Gonzalez lives in the 49th Ward of Chicago. An organizer for over two decades, he spent much of his career working to win immigrant rights. Along with his wife and others he founded Protect RP, an organization designed to protect 49th ward residents from raids by ICE. He is also the co-chair of Network 49 an independent political organization in the 49th ward.
We will leave plenty of time after for the traditional Drinks and Discourse: an informal space where we can get together face to face (irl) to hang out, drink, and discuss politics.
As usual, this space is for finding common ground, sharing experiences, and uniting the community.
Co-hosted by Chicago Progress and Reclaim Chicago North Chapter
